Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative Session 05: Birth Practices & Breastfeeding Overview: It’s very tempting to think of breastfeeding as a event that that happens at a point in time, for a particular length of time, as an event that happens quite apart from other events, actions, or experiences. In truth, however, breastfeeding is a process—not an event, and it is intricately intertwined with other practices that are related to but different from actual suckling. Skin-to-skin contact and other labor and delivery practices that occur in hospitals directly influence the breastfeeding experience. The purpose of this session is to help the participant to recognize how the nurse’s role and common labor and birth practices can become facilitators or barriers to exclusive breastfeeding and other positive birth outcomes.
