Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative Session 07: Postpartum Practices that Assist with Breastfeeding Overview: Decades of evidence has shown that hospital practices are a major barrier to breastfeeding initiation and continuation.1 Many of us, however, continue to carry out our daily assignments without giving much thought to those practices, or what their impact on breastfeeding might be. So many practices, such as giving bottles or pacifiers, are commonplace in our culture, and we might ask ourselves, “Why do we need to give up bottles or pacifiers? Isn’t that over the top?” Or, similarly, we might find ourselves saying to a colleague, “Rooming-in? Are you kidding me? I work nights. I can tell you those women don’t want rooming in. They want to sleep!” The goal of this learning program is to show how commonly-used practices (e.g., scheduled feeding, maternal-infant separation, bottles and pacifiers, and related practices) have no basis in evidence, and can be replaced with evidence-based practices that foster better health outcomes.
