|Session 09: Supporting the Non-Breastfeeding Mother & Baby
According to the World Health Organization, “Powdered infant formula (PIF) is not a sterile product, even if it has been manufactured to meet current hygiene standards.” Therefore, pathogens, most notably Salmonella enterica and Enterbacter sakazakii in infant formula have caused severe illness and even death. In 2002, the United States reported an incidence rate of 1 per 100,000 for E sakazakii and 139.4 cases per 100,000 infants for Enterbacter sakazakii. In 2005, the World Health Organization has therefore developed guidelines for the safe preparation, handling and storage of powdered infant formula (PIF). Most recently, hospitals that are trying to earn the Baby-Friendly Hospital designation are required to train all staff to teach parents how to prepare infant formula.
