||Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative Session 12: When the Baby is Unable to Suckle
Sometimes, babies cannot suckle at all, or they are too weak to suckle enough to get a full feeding. And, sometimes the baby actually can suckle, but he has a planned or unplanned separation from his mother. And, sometimes the mother, for whatever reason, is unavailable or unable to suckle her infant; in these cases, the baby needs his mother’s milk, or perhaps the milk from another mother. Mothers need to be able to remove milk from their breasts, either by hand, or with a pump; this is critical for the initiation and maintenance of milk production.
