Sometimes, we think that gifts from commercial entities, advertising and marketing, donations, and ready-made, free educational materials are desirable, helpful, or—at the very least—benign. Evidence, however, shows otherwise. Formula marketing practices are related to poor health outcomes, and to reduced initiation and continuation of breastfeeding. Rules and regulations about the marketing of infant formula may seem rigid, outdated, or irrelevant in a country where clean water and supplies are plentiful. Yet again, the evidence shows otherwise. The purpose of this learning program is to help healthcare professionals recognize our role in complying with the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes as a major evidence-based, ethical strategy for improving breastfeeding initiation and continuation in the United States and other developed countries.
